Market Overview
According to a survey by Banca d’Italia, Italy welcomed nearly 91 million visitors in 2017, an increase of about 6% on 2016. Outbound travel achieved almost 64 million which was an increase of 2% on 2016.
Italians travel mainly in the third quarter of the year. The top destination is France with 8,725,000 visitors, followed by Germany, Spain and UK. The top destination for long haul travel is USA, followed by Asia, Africa and Oceania.
Hotels and holiday villages are still the preferred accommodation style followed by house rentals.
Most leisure travellers are aged between 35-44 years, followed by travellers aged between 45-64 years. Travellers aged between 25 and 34 years represent 11% of the total number of leisure travellers.
Italian travellers prefer travelling abroad with their partner and without children (41.9%). The percentage of Italians travelling abroad as families with children is 25.3%. Only 8.1% of Italians travel abroad alone.
The main reason for travelling is for leisure, followed by business. Italy has more than 900 tour operators and more than 11,000 travel agencies.
