Growth in the region remains robust, employment is rising with the number of people in gainful activity reaching a new record of approximately 43.7 million people in June 2016.
In 2015 every German travelled an average of 20.6 days. Leisure holiday days totalled 1.67 billion, the highest ever recorded and an increase of 1.8 per cent on 2014. A total of 69.19 million holidays were taken with 40 per cent of these organised by tour operators.
We have 9,880 travel agencies and 2,500 tour operators. In 2015, 53.6 million travellers took holidays of more than 5 days with 71 per cent going abroad and 29 per cent travelling domestically.
Around 8.1 per cent of all (booked) holidays were long-haul trips with 3 per cent of these cruises, and the rest holidays taken by plane to the Mediterranean (two thirds) and car to neighbouring countries (a third).
Holiday spending is up in 2016 continuing a rising year on year trend. Trips costing more than Euro 3,000 per person are gaining greater importance, according to market researchers, GfK. Bookings costing over Euro 5,000 increased by more than 13 per cent.
Reliably curious, 42 per cent of Germans are planning to visit a destination they have never visited before. More than a third (38 per cent) of all holidays is expected to be made to new destinations.
Beach, relaxation, nature and family holidays remain popular in 2016. There is still interest in spa vacations and growth continues for cruises. City breaks are still a firm favourite.
The most popular foreign destinations include Spain, Italy and Greece. Cruises are popular as are numerous long-haul destinations (Asia, North America and Central America/Caribbean) which are seeing double-digit percentage growth.
